Energy
Energy companies are responsible for keeping many of the world’s day-to-day operations running smoothly – from power supplies to gasoline distribution. More and more, energy has been regulated by cyber assets, increasing the possibility for attack and a disruption of the critical services provided by energy corporations. Due to its nature as a home to large amounts of proprietary, varied data, the energy industry is under strict compliance regulations by FERN/NERC to ensure that energy resources are fairly traded on the market.
As with financial organizations, the data at energy companies is highly sensitive, and a breach in data security can lead to dire consequences and huge losses, not only on an internal basis, but in the open market at large. Additionally, energy companies are often targets for attack, and, as computer systems are often used to regulate energy distribution, these systems are particularly at risk. FERC and NERC require that repositories be both secure, and that the security operates on a transparent level, leading to high accountability for administrators and IT managers.
