Like Publishing companies, organizations in the Entertainment and Media spaces rely on their file systems to house their core assets: digital versions of films, television shows, music, and scripts, and articles and multimedia news. With the revolution of digital recording and editing tools, the Entertainment industry has invested in large-scale storage systems to host resource-intensive video and sound files, and has taken to employing larger editing teams to meet the demand of faster production schedules and more intensive special effects requirements. Media companies have increasingly taken their resources to the web, creating news websites and ezines with digital subscriptions in addition to (or sometimes in lieu of) hard copies.

They have also increasingly relied on freelance journalists and bloggers to deliver content to centralized editors from across the globe, helping them to increase the number of new articles released, but also adding to the number of emails that must be managed, and permissions changes that must be modified to ensure that consultants don’t retain access to shares once their jobs have been completed. In both the Entertainment and Media industries, content is most valuable when it is new and original. The Entertainment space struggles with issues like piracy and pre-release leaks, while organizations in the Media industry each strive to be the first to deliver breaking news. As a result, both industries lean heavily on their IT administrators to secure proprietary media across all channels.
